Wequassett Resort & Golf Club: How I Booked with Capital One Venture X

Some hotels are fun to try once, but others quickly become places you find yourself wanting to come back to again and again. That’s exactly how we feel about Wequassett Resort & Golf Club in Harwich, MA. We’ve now stayed here three years in a row, and it has become one of our favorite Cape Cod traditions.

How We Book Wequassett With the Capital One Venture X

One of my favorite credit cards has easily become my Capital One Venture X. While it does have a $395 annual fee, the amount of value we get from this card has made keeping it a no-brainer. Every year, you get a $300 travel credit when booking through Capital One Travel. You also receive 10,000 miles on your card anniversary, which can be redeemed for at least $100 toward travel with the Travel Eraser.

So between those two benefits alone, Capital One is basically paying me to keep this card... girl math!

For our Wequassett stay, I booked through the Capital One Travel portal instead of booking directly through the I Prefer Hotel Rewards program. Even though Wequassett is part of I Prefer, the Capital One booking ended up being the better value.

Through the Capital One hotel benefits, we received:

• A room upgrade

• A $100 resort credit

• A $80 breakfast credit

• Early check-in

• Late checkout

Our one-night stay at Wequassett cost $800 through Capital One Travel.

Here's how I booked it:

• I used my $300 annual Venture X travel credit, bringing the cost down to $500.

• I paid the remaining $500 with my Venture X card, which earned me 5k Capital One miles (since the Venture X earns 10x miles on hotels booked through Capital One Travel).

• Once the charge posted, I used 50k Capital One miles with the Travel Eraser to erase the remaining $500 purchase from my statement.

• Since I had just earned 5k miles from booking the hotel, I only needed 45k miles from my existing balance.

Could I have gotten more value by transferring miles to an airline or hotel program? Probably.

But for me, this was absolutely worth it and I'd book it the same way again in a heartbeat.

We don’t actually spend our whole Cape Cod vacation at the resort. We usually rent a house for the week and add one night at Wequassett onto the beginning or end of our trip. It’s the perfect way to add a little luxury to our family vacation without making the entire trip a resort stay. Trust me, I could easily spend all week here but unfortunately it's not in the budget (miles only go so far🙃).

The first time we visited Wequassett was for my 40th birthday, and that stay is what made us fall in love with this place. From the incredible service to all the little details they added to make my birthday special, we knew pretty quickly that this was somewhere we wanted to return to every year.

The Service

From the moment we arrive at Wequassett, we feel so welcomed. The staff is incredible, and they truly make you feel like royalty. During our first stay, one of the pool attendants asked if I wanted water after we arrived at the pool. As soon as I said yes, he immediately took off running to get it, literally jumping over bushes on the way. I had never seen anything like it, but I knew we were in for a good day.

They really went above and beyond for my birthday also. I received multiple birthday presents throughout our stay. It was shocking. A beautiful gift was delivered to me by the pool attendants, another gift came from our dinner server (and my kids each got one too!), and when we returned to our room, there was another gift waiting for me along with a bottle of champagne. Those little touches are what make Wequassett stand out. By the end of that first visit, I knew I needed to figure out a way to return here every year without paying the hefty price tag.

The Food

Our favorite restaurant is the Outer Bar & Grille right by the pool. It has a relaxed atmosphere that works perfectly for families, but the food is still incredible. You can also order the same food while sitting by the pool. My husband and I still dream about the fish tacos. They are that good.

We also love The Sill for a casual grab and go breakfast option. It's a tiny little hole-in-the-wall with amazing treats and delicious coffee. You must try the cruffin!

Wequassett is also very close to downtown Chatham with tons of restaurant options. It's also fun to go check out on your way out of town. We never want to leave the hotel though, honestly!

The Pool

The pool is one of the highlights for us. It is absolutely gorgeous and the vibes are top notch. Every day at 2pm (and sometimes again at 4pm), the ice cream truck arrives near the pool. The pool attendants choose a kid to walk around ringing a bell so everyone knows the ice cream truck has arrived. Our kids absolutely love this tradition. Although they don't want to ring the bell because they want to be first to get to the ice cream.😂

It’s these small details that make Wequassett feel different from other resorts. The way they also cater to kids and create these little moments throughout your stay is what makes it such a special place for families.

The Beach Excursion

One of my favorite things about Wequassett is the complimentary boat ride out to the outer beach. The island is absolutely stunning and we are usually the only ones out there. It is a spectacular place and I'll never get used to how amazing it is.

The boat ride itself is such a fun part of the experience, especially with kids. What’s crazy is that this experience alone would easily cost hundreds of dollars if you booked something similar on the Cape.

The captain brings waters, towels, chairs and whatever else you need to spend a few hours at the beach. On the ride back to the hotel, he let each of my kids "drive" the boat. The beach excursion is another major highlight of our stay ever year.

Activities for Kids

One thing I really appreciate about Wequassett is how much they do for families. They have so many little touches that make kids feel like they are just as important as the adults.

One of our kids' favorite parts is the splash pad located inside the kids club area. It’s open for families to enjoy throughout the day and is such a fun spot.

During the week, there is a naturalist in the bay who teaches kids about the wildlife and environment around the resort. I was probably more interested than my kids, but it was such a cool experience for all of us.

They also have dive-in movies and make them feel like a full event. When we watched Jaws, they had shark cookies, popcorn, and other special treats that made the night even more fun.

Final Thoughts

Wequassett has that classic, old-school luxury feel that is becoming harder to find. The rooms are beautifully renovated with all the modern touches you want, but it still maintains the charm and hospitality of a timeless Cape Cod resort.

After three stays, we completely understand why people return year after year.

For us, Wequassett isn't about spending an entire vacation at a luxury resort. It’s about adding a little bit of magic to our family vacation without blowing the budget. Thanks to points, miles, and the right credit card benefits, this has become a tradition we look forward to every year.
